Amur Maple - Acer ginnala
Description of Plant
Leaf: The leaves are 7.5 cm in length and 6 cm in width. They are ovate, toothed, and dark green above. The leaves have three deep lobes with the center lobe being the largest.
Flower: The flowers appear in upright clusters in late spring. They are an off white color and open after the young leaves appear.
Fruit: The fruits are found in drooping clusters and have red tinged wings. They are almost parallel and can reach a length of 2.5 cm.
Twig: Reddish brown.
Bark: The bark of this tree is smooth and a dark gray-brown in color
Form: This tree can reach a height of 10 meters. It has deciduous leaves that are broadly spreading.
Discussion of the Plant
This tree originally came from China and Japan. In its natural habitat it can be found in the thickets by river bands and in exposed positions in mountain valleys. These trees were imported to use ornamentally.
