Homework
The Chicago School Reform Board of Trustees orders that students be assigned homework on a regular basis. The homework should consist of well-planned relevant assignment to be completed outside of the classroom. The specific amount and frequency of the homework assignments should be based on the needs and interest of the students, just as it is in the content of the program of instruction. Students will also be given long-range assignments projects, and research to be done throughout the year.
Homework is a necessary element in the education of a child and should be assigned to:
  • provide reinforcement, practice discussion, and enrichment of what has been learned in class;
  • prepare the student for participation In class;
  • develop independent and responsible work skills as well as study habits;
  • expand learning activities beyond school hours;
  • provide an opportunity for the creativity of the student;
  • encourage a closer relatIonship between the home and school;
  • provide opportunities for the student to acquire experience In using the resources of the community.
These are the times suggested for homework assignments provided by the teacher:
  • 120 minutes a day for 9th grade students;
  • 130 minutes a day for 10th grade students;
  • 140 minutes a day for 11th grade students;
  • 150 minutes a day for 12th grade students.
